What are the origins and implications of the Golden Rule?

Religious views

Jews believe that the "Golden Rule" originated in the teachings of Moses. Christians believe that it originated in the teachings of Moses and Jesus. (Leviticus 19:18 -- ...thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; Matthew 7:12 -- Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. [KJV])

Secular views

The Golden Rule could be proved as not universally applicable, if one is to consider the example of a masochist person, who would like to have pain inflicted upon them, but would not ordinarily inflict pain upon others. However, this can be rephrased as "a masochist person would like to be pleased, and they would please the others as well", and transfer the debate onto the meaning of "to please".
